Black Mountain Tomiki Aikido

Black Mountain Aikido evolved from Queens University Aikido Club. In 2023, we moved venue to the Belfast Aikikai dojo on Ravenhill Road, Belfast. We have garnered around twenty members, with Jude McSpadden 3rd Dan (Aikikai), joining us for some sessions. Our club name comes from the mountain rising above West Belfast where the late John McCann, 2nd Dan, established a dojo adjunct to Queens University Belfast.

Our coaching team

Brendan Gunn (4th Dan)

Brendan started training with the late Charlie Simms in Belfast in the 1980s and gained Shodan in 1989 and Yondan in 2012.

After various interruptions to his Aikido journey he became involved in Queens University Aikido Club until this club closed during the Covid lockdown.

Subsequent to QUB Aikido Club closing, Brendan joined forces with Robert Stewart Shodan to revitalise the Black Mountain Tomiki Aikido Club first associated with the late John McCann Nidan in the Belfast Aikikai Dojo following a generous offer to use the space for our own classes.

Robert Stewart (1st Dan)

Robert started training as a first year student at Queens University Belfast in the QUB Aikido Club  in 2013 and gained Shodan at the Rising Dawn seminar in 2019.

When the new Black Mountain club reopened in 2023 at Ravenhill Hub in Belfast he joined Brendan Gunn as an instructor with a fresh approach and younger limbs.
