This is the first of our new series of technical ‘aide-memoire’ guides intended to support BAA Tomiki Aikido practitioners in their study of the Koryu no Kata. In order to promote the practice of these kata, the BAA’s Technical Development Group is naming a Koryu of the Year, around which a series of technical courses will be delivered.

The six Koryu No Kata (kata of ‘ancient’ or ’traditional’ forms) were devised largely by Hideo Oba with the approval of Kenji Tomiki and were sequentially designated Koryu Dai Ichi, Koryu Dai Ni, Koryu Dai San, Koryu Dai Yon, Koryu Dai Go and the Koryu Dai Roku. The Koryu No Kata were conceived to preserve and to develop an understanding, and knowledge of the techniques taught to Kenji Tomiki and Hideo Oba directly by Morihei Ueshiba, the Founder of Aikido.
